Homemade Wool Dryer Balls

I really dispise purchasing things that I simply throw away. It seems such a waste. Now add on top of that something that can be a fire risk as well as full of chemicals… Ya, no thanks! Dryer sheets are awful! I know they make laundry smell great and there is no static, but there are alternatives!

Homemade Dryer balls!!! 100% wool balls that live in your dryer. They help your clothes dry faster, fluff your towels, reduce static, and cause NO fire risk. These little guys can reduce your drying time by about 1/3 because they keep the laundry from balling together allowing the air to flow better! Speeding up the laundry process = WIN.

Not to mention these make great gifts for people who have EVERYTHING! I like to make a cute basket with Dryer Balls, Homemade Laundry Soap, and Homemade Dryer Sheets! Scent it all with essential oils and Ta-da!

Homemade Wool Dryer Balls

Supplies:

~ 100% Wool Yarn

~ Pair Panty Hose

~ Essential Oils (Optional)

Directions: Make a ball of yarn using about ½ a skein of yarn. To start a yarn ball, wrap the yarn around it’s self several times changing directions as you go.

Continue until a ball forms.

I like mine roughly “apple” size.

Once you achieve the size you like cut about a 6 inch tail to tie the ball. A crochet hook works perfect to pull the tail under and securely tie a knot. Tuck any remaining tail in to yarn ball.

Place tied ball in to the toe of a pair of panty hose and tie a knot.

Continue filling panty hose with desired amount of dryer balls. Cut off excess panty hose and toss the “chain” in the washer with your regular wash.

You need to wash and dry these 6-8 times to get them to felt. I have found that a traditional top load washer felts better than a front loader. If you have a front loader just keep washing and drying them! They will felt!

Once they are felted (All smooshed and stuck together) remove from panty hose. Simply add 4-6 balls to the dryer in place of dryer sheets. Essential oils can be added to the dryer balls to give your laundry a fresh scent. No more fire hazard chemical filled dryer sheets!
